Welcome to Manchester Lower Limb Trauma Course. A trauma and orthopaedics cadaveric approaches course aimed at consultants, senior and junior trainees, SAS and theatre practitioners.

OVERVIEW:

This one day course will incorporate the development of surgical skills in a cadaveric workshop with clinical decision making in lower limb trauma, from arrival at the Emergency Department to emergency management and definitive treatment.

In this course you will learn: trauma and orthopaedic approaches to proximal femur, mid femur, distal femur medial and lateral approaches, Knee approaches including posterior and posterior medial, fasciotomy, Tibia plateau approaches, distal tibia approaches. The fixation methods for each section will be also practiced including nailing, Plating of femur, tibia plateau, and distal femur, external fixation methods.

Learning will be tailored to learners group level. Trainees will have the opportunity to complete indexed PBA. Senior fellows and consultants will be guided to more advanced approaches. 

The faculty are all experienced Orthopaedic surgeons, and the high faculty to participant ratio will ensure maximal hands on experience.

Attendees will need to bring hospital identification for admission.

JOSEPH ALSOUSOU

Pelvis, Acetabulum and hip arthroplasty consultant surgeon at Manchester University Hospital NHS trust. He was fellowship trained in both Oxford and Cambridge. His clinical focus is on Pelvis trauma surgery, periprosthetic and complex hip arthroplasty. His academic work has attracted several awards including: EFORT, BOA, BOFAS, BASEM and ARUK awards.

Amer Shoaib

Consultant orthopaedic limb reconstruction and foot and ankle surgeon at Manchester University Foundation trust. Amer is an experienced trauma and war surgeon. His experience extends from Bosnia, Syria, Yemen and Iraq. His is founder director of Orthocycle charity

Guest Faculty

Professor Caroline Hing

Caroline is a consultant and Professor of orthopaedic surgeon at St George’s Hospital, London. She completed her Orthopaedic and Trauma training on the Pott Rotation based at Barts and The London Hospitals with a further period of training at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital whilst completing an MD, doctoral thesis and MSc in Orthopaedic. Her fellowships included trauma at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia and knee surgery at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals in London. As part of AOUK she chairs research and careers development. She lectures nationally and internationally on patellofemoral instability and trauma.

Mobeen Ismail

Mr Ismail is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in knee and hip surgery at Manchester university foundation trust . He has visited centres of excellence in orthopaedic surgery in the US and Europe to learn new techniques. Mr Ismail specialises in all aspects of hip and knee surgery including sports injuries. He is very experienced lower limb trauma surgeon with wealth of experience in dealing with complex trauma.

Mr Vishal Kumar

Consultant Orthopaedic, Trauma and Hip Surgeon at Manchester university Hospitals foundation trust. He is Fellowship Trained in Pelvic/ Lower Limb Reconstruction from Imperial College London and Furlong Lower Limb Arthroplasty Fellowship. His Special Interest is in Complex Ortho-Plastic Reconstructions, Revision Lower limb Trauma.

Mr Aiman Khuda

Aiman is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Salford Royal Hospital Major Trauma Centre (MTC). Aiman has developed a broad experience in managing major trauma from training in 5 different MTCs. Aiman’s special interest is in Limb Reconstruction Surgery, managing sequelae of severe limb trauma and in Joint Preserving Knee Surgery through re-alignment (Osteotomy). Aiman is the Clinical Director for Major Trauma and Orthoplastics for the Northern Care Alliance and the Regional Surgical Advisor for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Mr Paul Nesbit

Consultant Trauma and Limb Reconstruction Surgeon at Manchester University Hospital NHS Trust. Paul was fellowship trained at Leeds Major Trauma Centre and the Advanced Orthopaedic training centre in Tygerberg, South Africa. He has an interest in treating severe traumatic lower limb injuries, bone infection and Lower limb deformity.

Mr Sanat Shah

Sanat Shah is a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon based at Manchester university hospital NHS foundation trust since 2003. He has undergone extensive postgraduate training in India and the United Kingdom with an AO Fellowship under Professor H J Ostern at Allgemeines Krankenhaus, Celle, Germany in 1996. He underwent his specialist orthopaedic training in and around the Manchester and Southampton regions and developed sub-specialty interest in hip and knee replacement and revision surgery and lower limb trauma surgery.

Mr David Ellis

Mr Ellis Consultant at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI), part of Manchester Foundation Trust, since 2000. He graduated from both St. Andrews and Manchester and trained in the North West and Yorkshire. David is the MRI Major Trauma Centre lead for adults. He has extensive experience in trauma surgery

Sofia Thoma

Sofia is a consultant Orthopaedic surgeon at Manchester University Hospitals Foundation trust. She holds and MD and MSc from University of Athens. She completed her orthopaedic training in Asklepieion Hospital, Greece then fellowship in Oxford and Birmingham. Her special interest is Sarcoma, tumors and trauma surgery.

Andrew Gray

Andrew Gray is a consultant T&O surgeon based at James Cook University hospital major trauma centre in South Tees. He has a specialist interest in fragility fractures being a previous orthopaedic representative on both the global board of the Fragility Fracture Network (FFN) and the UK Royal Osteoporosis Society (2020-2023). He is the current secretary for the UK FFN and also co-chair of the F.A.N. (2019-present day) – Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) and Acadamy Network – a European initiative committed to starting new and making current FLS services more effective. He was the lower limb editor for the trauma journal ‘Injury’. 2014-2021 and has been faculty for all level AO trauma courses since 2010. His qualifications include a Doctorate in medicine with distinction from the University of Edinburgh and a first-class honours degree in Physiology and Sports Science. He is a founder member of the UK Orthopaedic Trauma Society and is their current communications lead. Hobbies and interests are now focused on recurring attempts to improve fitness and his future fragility fracture risk score, whilst chairing the Northern Counties Medical Golf society.

Arun Kumar

Arun is a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Manchester University Hospital Foundation trust. He completed my higher surgical training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on Manchester rotation and fellowship in Lower Limb Arthroplasty in Toronto and fellowship at the University Hospitals of Leicester. He was awarded Travelling Fellowship by The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and John Charnley Trust for Fellowship in Canada. He Arun regularly teaches on National and International courses. He is clinical division director at MFT.

Will Chellam

Will is a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon at Manchester University Hospital NHS Trust. He has completed fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery at the Royal Liverpool Hospital and in Trauma surgery at Leeds Major Trauma Centre. He is clinical lead for the adult major trauma service and has a specialist interest in polytrauma and lower limb trauma including foot and ankle, limb reconstruction, orthoplastics and bone infection.
