Welcome to Manchester Pelvic Trauma Course. A pelvic trauma cadaveric approaches course aimed at consultants, senior and junior trainees, SAS and theatre practitioners.

OVERVIEW:

This one-day course will incorporate the development of surgical skills in a cadaveric workshop with clinical decision making in pelvic trauma, from arrival at the Emergency Department to emergency management in the hybrid theatre and definitive treatment.

Delegates will have the chance to learn the following procedures: Stoppa approach, Pubic symphysis plating, Acetabulum columns access and plating, pelvic approaches, anterior fixation, K-L approach and posterior fixation and more. They will have an understanding of the surgical anatomy related to the procedure, operative steps and the principles of how to perform the procedure safely. (See our program)

The faculty are all experienced pelvic surgeons, and the high faculty to participant ratio will ensure maximal hands-on experience.

Attendees will need to bring hospital identification for admission.

No cameras or telephones are allowed in the cadaveric lab.

JOSEPH ALSOUSOU

Pelvis, Acetabulum and hip arthroplasty consultant surgeon at Manchester University Hospital NHS trust. He was fellowship trained in both Oxford and Cambridge. His clinical focus is on Pelvis trauma surgery, periprosthetic and complex hip arthroplasty. His academic work has attracted several awards including: EFORT, BOA, BOFAS, BASEM and ARUK awards. He is the founder director of Rooms4nhs.com charitable initiative

Mukai Chimutengwende-Gordon

Mukai Chimutengwende-Gordon is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon at Hull University Teaching Hospitals. Her specialist interests are pelvic and acetabular reconstruction, hip arthroplasty and major trauma. She is an honorary Senior Lecturer at Hull York Medical School. She did her undergraduate training at Bristol Medical school, basic surgical training in Oxford and her Registrar training on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore rotation. She was on the integrated academic training rotation and did an MSc in surgical science (distinction) and a PhD in bioengineering at University College London. She was awarded an MRC clinical research fellowship for her PhD. Her post CCT fellowships were in revision and complex lower limb arthroplasty at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia and pelvic reconstruction and complex trauma at Cambridge University Hospitals.

Chris Jordan

Chris Jordan is a consultant at Imperial College Healthcare working at St Mary’s Hospital In London. His has an interest in pelvic and acetabular trauma and hip arthroplasty. He joined Imperial after undertaking postgraduate training in the Wessex deanery and a post CCT fellowships in P&A at the Royal Melbourne hospital in Australia and a Hip Arthroplasty at Hampshire Hospitals NHS trust. Before medicine Chris read for an undergraduate masters degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol.

Mohamed Kenawy

Mohamed is a Paediatric Orthopaedic surgeon at the Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital, with an interest in hip surgery, adolescent hip preservation, limb reconstruction & complex trauma. His research interests are in the field of paediatric pelvic trauma & limb recon.

Mr Nikhil Shah

Mr Nikhil Shah is a fellowship-trained consultant at Wrightington hospital with an interest in complex primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery, periprosthetic fractures, complex acetabular reconstruction, pelvic discontinuity and custom acetabular reconstructions. His specialist trauma practice includes the management of pelvic-acetabular injuries which he delivers out of the regional major trauma centre as part of a regional team. He has won several awards including the prestigious Rothman Ranawat American Hip Society Travelling Fellowship, and BOA- Zimmer Travelling fellowship. He was also the Young Ambassador of the British Orthopaedic association to Hong Kong in 2004 after being awarded the Walter Mercer medal and the Edward Burton Memorial Prize FRCS (Orth) for FRCS (Orth) exam.

Nik Kanakaris

Nik Kanakaris MD PhD, is a Consultant pelvic and acetabular reconstruction surgeon at Leeds Teaching Hospitals since 2008 and the Clinical Lead for the LEEDS Major Trauma Centre since 2013. He is the Chair of the Major Incident Steering Group, Lead for Research and Innovation for Orthopaedic Trauma at LTHT, and vice-Chair of the EFORT Trauma Education Group.  He has published extensively his clinical and research work in more than 170 peer-reviewed scientific publications and over 80 chapters of scientific textbooks.

Mohammed Rafi iqbal

Consultant Pelvic and Acetabular Orthopaedic Surgeon at Salford Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He has a wide experience of pelvic and acetabular surgery, as well as contributing to the Major Trauma service in Salford. He completed a fellowship in Pelvic and Acetabular Surgery at King’s College Hospital in London, as well as a Hip Arthoplasty fellowship in Cambridge.

Inder Gill

Mr Gill is a Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at Salford Royal Infirmary. He was awarded an international surgical fellowship at Royal Perth Hospital, Australia for specialist training in joint replacement surgery. He also completed specialist training in complex trauma during fellowship at Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 2012 and Visiting Pelvic Trauma Fellowship at Wrightington and Wigan NHS trust. He is the lead for Pelvic surgery at Salford Royal Hospital.

James Bassett

James is a Consultant in James Cook Hospital Middlesbrough with special interest in management of Major Trauma patients including pelvic and acetabular reconstruction and primary and revision hip arthroplasty. He trained in Bristol before completing fellowship training in Adelaide. He helped to formalise the British Association of Pelvic and Acetabular Surgeons and is currently working with a team of surgeons to develop national standards to help improve the care of patients with Pelvic and Acetabular injuries in the UK.

Mr Whelton is a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon at Preston and Wrightington hospitals, specialising in pelvic and acetabular trauma, complex hip arthroplasty and revision. He undertook fellowship in both Wrightington and Addenbrooke’s hospitals.

Mr Vijay Kempanna

Mr Vijaya Kempanna is a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic surgeon at Salford Royal Hospital and Northern Care alliance Hospitals at Manchester, specialised in Pelvic & Acetabular trauma Surgery, Complex lower limb trauma, Hip and Knee arthroplasty.  He is a Gold Medallist in MS (Orth) from Bangalore University, India. He undertook fellowship in Complex trauma and Pelvic & Acetabular Surgery at Southampton University Hospitals.

Vijay Completed prestigious Hip fellowship under Prof Dunlop at Southampton University Hospitals with extensive experience in complex Hip arthroplasty including revisions, periprosthetic fracture management and pelvic discontinuity related arthroplasty

Andrew Gray

Andrew Gray is a consultant T&O surgeon based at James Cook University hospital major trauma centre in South Tees. He has a specialist interest in fragility fractures being a previous orthopaedic representative on both the global board of the Fragility Fracture Network (FFN) and the UK Royal Osteoporosis Society (2020-2023). He is the current secretary for the UK FFN and also co-chair of the F.A.N. (2019-present day) – Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) and Acadamy Network – a European initiative committed to starting new and making current FLS services more effective. He was the lower limb editor for the trauma journal ‘Injury’. 2014-2021 and has been faculty for all level AO trauma courses since 2010. His qualifications include a Doctorate in medicine with distinction from the University of Edinburgh and a first-class honours degree in Physiology and Sports Science. He is a founder member of the UK Orthopaedic Trauma Society and is their current communications lead. Hobbies and interests are now focused on recurring attempts to improve fitness and his future fragility fracture risk score, whilst chairing the Northern Counties Medical Golf society.

Albert Chikate

FRCS MSc Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. Albert is a consultant trauma surgeon at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.  He trained in the HEENW and did his orthopaedic trauma fellowship at King’s College London. He has a keen interest in MSK trauma and is passionate about teaching.
